John holds several graduate degrees: a Master of Social Work, (New Mexico Highlands University), a Master of Divinity in Missiology from Catholic Theological Union (Chicago, IL) an MBA from the University of Phoenix (Albuquerque, NM), and a PhD in Organization Development from Benedictine University (Lisle, IL).
John has lived and worked in Northern New Mexico for 30+ years in many different roles: social worker, mental health therapist, substance abuse counselor, professor, author, clergy person, and entrepreneur.
John is the founder-owner and clinical director of Nueva Vida Counseling & Consulting Services, LLC (NVCCS), while at the same time supporting local communities in the expansion of mental health and pastoral counseling services as a master-level (MSW) Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Licensed Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor (LADAC), and Organization Development consultant (PhD).
John works with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families, as well as persons with a dual diagnosis, co-occurring disorders, and spiritual and religious concerns.
Therapeutic interventions include, but are not limited to treatment for: Depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, chronic pain, grief/loss, sexual abuse, anger management, domestic violence, DWI prevention, and substance use disorders.
John specializes in the following therapeutic modalities: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma Focused-CBT, Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Circle of Security (Parenting), Sand Tray and Play Therapies, Solution Focused and Brief Therapies, Structural and Family Systems Therapies.
